How to download from Twitch
Twitch has two kinds of saved video: clips, which are short highlights anyone watching can cut, and VODs, which are recordings of past broadcasts. Those are the two things a link can point at. A live channel is not one of them - a broadcast in progress is being produced as you watch it, and there is no finished file until the stream ends and the streamer keeps it.

Work out whether you have a clip or a VOD. Clip addresses contain /clip/ or use the clips subdomain, followed by a memorable word-salad name. VOD addresses are /videos/ followed by a number.
For a clip, use the clip page. Open the clip on its own page and use the share option, or copy the address bar. Do not use the channel URL - that points at whatever is live right now, which is a different thing every day.
For a VOD, open it from the channel. Go to the channel's Videos tab, open the past broadcast or highlight you want, and copy the address. Timestamps appended to the URL are fine.

What each of these covers
- Clips
- Short highlights cut by viewers or the streamer. They are stored permanently unless deleted, which makes them the most reliable thing to link to.
- VODs and highlights
- Recordings of past broadcasts. Ordinary VODs are kept for a limited period that depends on the streamer's account type; highlights the streamer has saved are kept indefinitely.
- live broadcasts(not supported)
- A stream in progress has no finished file. If the streamer keeps VODs, the recording appears after the broadcast ends.
- subscriber-only VODs(not supported)
- Some streamers restrict past broadcasts to subscribers, which puts them behind a login.
Worth knowing
Tips for Twitch links
- Clips outlive VODs. Ordinary past broadcasts are deleted automatically after a retention window, so a clip is the safer thing to save a link to.
- A channel URL is not a video URL - it points at whatever that channel is doing at the moment, which changes constantly.
- A VOD that existed last month may simply have aged out. That is Twitch's retention policy doing its job, not an error.
