What you actually do
Copy the link
Share menu, then Copy link. Or the address bar on a computer.
It has to point at one video. A profile or a feed does not.
Paste it
Into the box at the top. The platform is recognised for you.
Extra words around the link are fine. The URL is picked out of them.
Download
Pick a format from the list and save it.
Only the formats the platform actually publishes. Nothing is padded.
The same three steps, written out
01. Copy the link. Open the post on the platform it lives on, then use its Share or ⋯ menu and choose Copy link. On a desktop browser you can copy the address straight from the address bar instead.
02. Paste it. Drop the link into the box at the top of the page. Pasting the whole share message is fine - the URL is picked out for you, and the platform is recognised automatically.
03. Download. Press Download and wait a moment while the link is checked. The formats that are actually available for that post appear underneath - pick one and save it.

What survives a request
Kept, and only briefly
- The platform’s own id for the video
- That video’s public details: title, thumbnail, duration, available files
- Ordinary web server access logs: IP address, browser, time, path requested
Your IP address is also what rate limiting counts, which is what stops one automated client using up the capacity everyone shares.
Never kept
- Your link, stored as text
- The video file. It streams through and is not archived
- An account, a login or a profile. There are none
- Analytics, ad networks, or a cookie for either
Retention periods live in the Privacy Policy, which is the authoritative version of all of this.
Links that will not work
Most failed downloads are one of these, and none of them are worth retrying.
One video, one link
A page that lists many
Profile and hashtag pages
A list of many videos never identifies one.
Playlists and whole accounts
One link, one video. There is no bulk mode.
Posts with no video
Images and text have no video link to give.
Links cut short
Chat apps truncate. Copy it again from the share menu.
Private or login-only
Not served publicly, and access controls are not worked around.
Deleted videos
The file stops being served. This is not an archive.
Stories and live streams
One expires. The other has no finished file yet.

Why right-click and save is not enough
Most platforms send video in small pieces. Right-click saves one piece, or nothing. Putting the pieces back into one file is the job.
If a download stops part-way
Almost always the connection rather than the file. Start it again on a stable one, and generate a fresh link if it keeps failing, because platform links expire.
